This
section of the Ramblas owes its name to the former Estudi General,
the predecessor of the University of Barcelona.
The
Rambla is limited by Carme and
Portaferrissa streets (a chiefly
shopping area, very busy at the weekend and during the sales). This
is also the Rambla of the animals, where you can buy cats, dogs,
tortoises, and birds, which gives it its other name, the Rambla
dels Ocells (Rambla of the birds).
Interesting
sights include the Teatre Poliorama
and the building of the Compañía de Tabacos
de Filipinas (1880), with its baroque style.
BETLEM
CHURCH
This is one of the main Gothic-baroque monuments of the city and
one of the worst affected by fires and wars throughout its history.
It was built in 1553, although the interior decoration was not completed
until 1855.
CARRER
HOSPITAL
This
is one of the main arteries of the Raval
neighbourhood, with the Teatro
Romea, one of the most important theatres of the city.
