This
section goes from the Boqueria
to the beginning of the La Rambla de Santa
Mónica. This part of the Ramblas used to be a curious
mixture of people from the lower classes and the well-off going
to the Opera (Gran Teatre del Liceu). The Teatro
Principal can also be found in this section of the Ramblas.
THE
GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU
Inaugurated
on the 4 April 1847, it has survived fires and assaults (in 1893
an anarchist committed an outrage against Barcelona's high society
congregated here). One of the bombs which did not explode is exhibited
in the Museu de la Ciutat.
In
1994, this magnificent internationally recognized theatre suffered
a devastating fire which reduced it to ashes.
One
of the most beautiful opera theatres with the best sound on the
world opera circuit has now been rebuilt.
PLAÇA
REIAL
Going
down the Rambla dels Caputxins to the left we find the most spectacular
architectural masterpiece of Ciutat Vella: the
Plaça Reial, which was built in 1850 by Francesc Daniel
Molina. Street lamps designed by the famous modernist architect
Antoni Gaudí were added later.
This
square is par excellence one of the most popular leisure spaces
of the youth of Barcelona.
On
Sunday mornings there is an old stamp and coin market, at midday
the famous terraces of the square open for people to have an apéritif
and at night the square becomes one of the focal points of Barcelona's
night life, with venues such as the Jamboree, the Karma, the Sidecar,
etc.
PALAU
GÜELL
Located
at Carrer Nou de la Rambla 3-5 and built by Antoni Gaudí, one of
the great geniuses of architecture of all times, between the years
1885 and 1889. It was the residence of the magnate Eusebi Güell,
Gaudí's patron. The Palau Güell houses the
Museu de les Arts del Espectacle.
