This
wide road is considered to be the border of the Golden
Square. Although not as splendid as Passeig
de Grācia this avenue is of interesting architectural
value, with Tetuán and Verdaguer
squares.
SALESAS
CHURCH AND MONUMENT TO VERDAGUER
The
Salesas church is at the corner of Passeig de Sant Joan and Calle
Valčncia. It is a Gothic-style construction, built by Joan Martorell
between 1882 and 1885. A few metres away, going toward Avinguda
Diagonal, is the curious Claveguera (Sewer) museum, which introduces
the visitor to the network of underground galleries of Barcelona.
At the junction with Avinguda de Diagonal is the monument to Jacint
Verdaguer, a priest and writer who defended Catalan language and
culture, by Josep Maria Pericās (1924).
PALAU
MACAYA
This
is another masterpiece of the Barcelona modernist period, by the
architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Along the lines of other modernist
constructions which favoured the Gothic models, it is situated at
Passeig de Sant Joan no. 108 and is currently the headquarters of
the Cultural Centre of the Caixa de Pensions.
