The Mercat del Born was built according to the plans of the engineer Josep Mª Cornet i Mas, with the building work overseen by Josep Fonteré from 1873 to 1876.

The legendary tournaments of knights took place in the Passeig del Born in the Middle Ages.

The Provincial Library, the biggest of Barcelona with an approximate surface area of 15,000 m2, is currently being built here.
