At
the end of the 11th century, the famous Benjamín de Tudela praised
the Jewish area of Barcelona, saying that though small, this occidental
square of the roman city had become the most important cultural
centre of Catalunya and the whole Mediterranean world of the time.
Poets,
philosophers, astronomers, writers, doctors, surgeons, distinguished
representatives of these and others guilds made the reputation of
to our city from the 11th to the 15th century.
To
stress the cultural relevance of the Jewish borough, just think
that for many centuries, the only University in Catalunya was Barcelona's
Jewish "Escuela Mayor o Universitaria".
The
visit focuses specially in "El Call" (this is the name of Jewish
quarter). There are not many visible remains from the past, and
it is mostly the name of the streets that link the area to its Jewish
past. Nonetheless, as we stroll through this maze of little streets
we will tell you its story and that of the Crown of Aragon.
